Mitchell Point Uncovered!
by Jeanette Kloos
Visit our volunteer page for current volunteer opportunities

Four volunteers and three OPRD staff people
gathered at Mitchell Point on
August 27.
We uncovered part of another section of the
old pavement, east of Mitchell Creek.
If you have a copy of the Wyeth to Hood
River HCRH State Trail Plan, this small
piece can be seen on page 31.
Glenn Littrell wondered when this pavement
had last seen traffic or been paved.
According to the Nomination of the highway
to the National Register, Mitchell Point was
closed in 1953 - so this would probably be
the latest date.

Thank you to the six volunteers and four OPRD
staff that participated in the work party at Mitchell Point.
We cleared a good section of
the Historic Columbia River Highway pavement,
even though there was a lot of poison oak
growing over it.
The pavement appears to be in
very good condition, with only one tree root
bump found so far.
Todd even found some of the old yellow
centerline!
We worked a total of about 24 hours, plus travel
time.
